Lesson 94: Walking in the Rain

Over the last few years post COVID-19, vacation travel trends have shifted significantly, primarily influenced by increasing costs for international travel and changing consumer behaviors. Travelers have increasingly turned to domestic destinations, opting for road trips, camping, and visits to national parks to minimize travel costs associated with international travel. There's also been a heightened focus on sustainable and responsible travel practices, with travelers seeking eco-friendly accommodations, supporting local businesses, and minimizing their environmental footprint. Conscious consumerism has become a driving force behind travel decisions, influencing destination choices, activity preferences, and overall travel spend.

With this in mind, purposeful travel planning and budgeting couldn’t be more paramount for the average traveler, especially for younger people looking to embark on travel outside of their country. Of course, planning a vacation is exciting, but it can also be daunting, especially when it comes to managing your finances. Establishing a comprehensive travel budget can be extremely helpful so you know what to expect on your travel, and help avoid being surprised by “out of the blue” costs that you weren’t expecting. A budget can also help you see where your planned trip expenses fit into your overall personal budget for the year. Let’s dive into what a travel budget looks like, and what considerations should be factored in to building it.

We’ll start with the budget framework. The list below outlines various spending categories to consider as part of your trip planning budget:

1)      Airfare: Research flight options and allocate a reasonable amount for airfare based on your destination and travel dates. Balance between airfare cost, airline quality, and flight itinerary duration. Airfare can be the most expensive part of a trip, so targeting this spend category makes sense from a cost savings standpoint. But sacrificing hours on end just to save a couple bucks may not be the most satisfying decision, especially right at the start of your trip!

2)      Accommodation: Have a budget for per night costs, and be mindful of additional fees that are included when booking accommodations, like tax, cleaning fees, and other hotel miscellaneous expenses. Consider hotel alternatives like vacation rentals, hostels, or budget-friendly hotels & motels. Again, be mindful that saving money on accommodation may be at the expense of sacrificing quality. Consider staying off the beaten path or choosing accommodations near your desired attractions. This approach often offers more affordable rates compared to central locations while providing unique experiences and immersion in the local culture.

3)      Transportation: Account for car rentals, public transportation, or gas expenses for road trips. If you aren’t renting a car, try and budget for spending money on taxis and ride sharing services. This can easily add up, especially if you are staying in a high cost of living city.

4)      Food: Estimate daily meal costs and factor in dining out versus grocery shopping. Again, be mindful of eating out costs in high “cost of living” cities, and consider some budget friendly options like complimentary breakfasts at your accommodation, or light grocery shopping for simple lunches and snacks.

5)      Entertainment: I suppose this can be lumped together with food or miscellaneous, but budget for entertainment expenses that you have planned for ahead of time, as well as a buffer to allow for flexibility around expenses you have not planned for. Make sure to budget for tours, attractions, and activities you plan to indulge in during your vacation.

6)      Miscellaneous & Other: This can include expenses such as travel insurance, visa fees, and souvenirs. Ideally, book your travel with a credit card that already has travel insurance included. If not, make sure to purchase travel insurance ahead of time, even if this is tends to be an overlooked expense (and a lot of time, avoided altogether). It’s a low cost item to cover you for a low probability but high consequence event (just like home insurance). Also, double check for visa requirements where you are going. Tarvel visa fees, if applicable, are usually very low, and can be applied for online. However, processing times make take as little as a few hours, or as long as a few weeks.

Now, we’ll look at few additional considerations to be mindful of when building your travel budget:

Conduct Thorough Research: Empower yourself by conducting your own research instead of solely relying on travel agencies. Utilize online resources, read reviews, and compare prices across different platforms to snag the best deals on flights, accommodations, and activities.

Leverage Loyalty Reward Programs: Take advantage of loyalty programs offered by airlines and hotel chains to earn points and redeem rewards for future travel. By consistently using these programs, you can unlock discounts, free nights, and other perks, ultimately reducing your vacation expenses.

Travel Light and Smart: Packing efficiently not only saves space but also helps avoid additional transportation costs, such as checked baggage fees. Stick to essentials, opt for versatile clothing, and consider laundry facilities at your accommodation to minimize the need for excess luggage.

Book in Advance: Avoid last-minute price surges by booking your flights, accommodations, and activities well in advance. By planning ahead, you can secure lower rates and have a wider selection of options to choose from, ensuring a smoother and more cost-effective travel experience.

Embrace Group Travel and Cost Sharing: If you're traveling with friends or family, capitalize on the benefits of group travel. By staying together and sharing expenses like accommodations, transportation, and meals, you can significantly reduce individual costs while enhancing the overall experience.

Adhering to your budget throughout the planning and execution of your vacation doesn’t need to feel tedious and extremely regimented (although moderate spending discipline is always encouraged!). It gives you guardrails to work within, and it will give you some spending flexibility throughout your travels. This will ensure that you and your travel companions can have a fun time vacationing while not having to be bogged down with worry about surprise costs and affordability of different travel costs.

While creating a budget is essential, its effectiveness lies in your commitment to following it. Track your spending, prioritize experiences that will give you maximum utility while aligning with your budget, and resist the temptation to overspend impulsively.

By implementing these practical tips and staying mindful of your budget, you can enjoy a memorable vacation without straining your finances, and without appearing to your travel friends that you are the cheapest person on planet Earth who would rather walk 5 miles to the hotel in the pouring rain at night as opposed to taking an Uber just to save a couple bucks.
